Cyberpunk 2077 is exactly what its makers promised it would be: a revolutionary game. CD Projekt RED, creators of The Witcher 3 (2015), announced the development in 2012. Eight years have now served to create a narrative universe that, it seems will define the next generation of video games.
“Welcome to Night City”
The year is 2077. Nuclear war has devastated the world. Economic crises are continuing, irreparably pushing people to live in poverty, surrendering to a hopeless future. Despite all this, an oasis of relative peace called Night City shines like a beacon of light in Northern California. It is the last great megalopolis, the final escape from a life doomed to failure, as well as a lifeline for those seeking a new beginning.
Night City can look like a disused neighborhood, or a more luxurious city, or even a desert area, depending on what district you’re in. Between gangs, corporations, and religious groups, someone is trying to build a reputation and survive in this tech forest of Night City. And that somebody is V.
A complex world
Cyberpunk 2077 is a complex game, especially for those who are not used to role-playing scenarios. The choice remains the cornerstone of the gaming experience by CD Projekt RED. It’s partially a narrative-focused story: the decisions players make affect the eventual outcome. In this, it is similar to Heavy Rain, Life Is Strange, and The Witcher 3.
The narrative structure is meticulously connected to every single choice and option, allowing the creators to add a great number of details to this enormous experience. The player will learn that, just like in the real world, if you fail, you fail. You cannot go back and redo a mission, the character must live with their mistake and its consequences. The first mission, V, turns out to contain the construct of Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves). The cohabitation between V and Johnny Silverhand is the main hub of the story and constitutes the backbone of the entire main quest.
Cyberbug?
Below the technical level, however, several bug and graphic glitches spoil the game context a bit. Cyberpunk 2077 is the next generation. If played on a console like Playstation 5 or even better on a high-performance PC, the players will appreciate it. Unfortunately, if the player hopes to play it on Playstation 4 and Xbox One the situation is problematic and prone to disaster; as the creators write on the FAQ page of the game. This pushed the CD Projekt to send refunds to those who cannot afford to enjoy the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 takes inspiration from both a large movie imaginary: Blade Runner to Akira and Ghost in the Shell, passing by Mad Max Fury Road, resulting overall a fun game. Even after 100 hours has so much quality entertainment to offer and manages to be immensely larger than the sum of its parts, singularly not always perfect.
